Norway House Health Centre of Excellence
Project Type
Remote New Build
Date
2024 Substantial Completion
Location
Norway House Cree Nation, Manitoba
The Kinosew Sipi Nanatawiwekamik Health Centre of Excellence is a 101,900 sq ft facility 450 km north of Winnipeg — the largest health centre in Manitoba history under First Nations control. The community sits on an island, reached by ferry in open water and by ice road in winter, and every piece of equipment arrived by one of the two. With no natural gas service there, the plant runs dual-fuel on propane with diesel backup, and the four cast iron boilers carry flue exhaust economizers to recover heat from the stack. Around them BPL supplied two banks of six-pipe heat recovery chiller-heaters, nine custom rooftop units and a hundred and thirteen radiant ceiling panels. Severe-duty selection ran through the whole project: −50 °F ratings against a −20 °F factory standard. This far north that is the baseline, not an upgrade — Manitoba winters don't negotiate.
Equipment supplied by BPL Sales:
- 9 × Custom rooftop air handling units — 5,200 to 15,700 CFM
- 6 × Air handling units, plus a heat recovery module and a make-up air unit
- 2 × 210-ton six-pipe simultaneous heat recovery chiller/heater banks
- 4 × Cast iron boilers with flue exhaust economizers, dual-fuel propane / No. 2 oil burners and a custom flue venting package
- 2 × Dry fluid coolers — severe-duty motors rated to −50 °F
- 30 × Pumps, 10 × expansion tanks, 4 × air separators
- Domestic water booster package
- 28 × Unit heaters, 10 × force flow heaters
- 113 × Radiant ceiling panels
- 9 × Humidifiers
- Hydronic coils and reheat coils
- 6 × Split systems, 1 × fan coil
- In-floor heating, designed in house.
Closing note:
Every piece of HVAC equipment in this building was supplied by BPL, along with the domestic booster pumps, and every piece of it was commissioned on site by BPL's own factory-trained and certified technicians. On a site reached by ferry or ice road, that is the difference between a fault that gets fixed and a fault that waits for someone to travel in — and it means one number to call, with no argument about whose equipment is responsible. The owner's staff were trained by the same team, in the same visits.
